Fall Photo Showcase

The event will take place November 12th on the WSU Vancouver campus. Submissions are open to students/faculty and staff of WSU Vancouver only.

The Travel Café has been a staple on our campus for many years. The original goal was for people to submit photos of their travels, hence the name, but this can be limiting. As I took over the planning of the event, I worried that students wouldn’t submit their work if it wasn’t a travel related photo. I myself was guilty of this in the past. So, with great excitement, I’d like to announce the new name of our event: the Fall Photo Showcase. This name speaks more to the heart and goal of the event: for students to submit their best work and have it displayed for their peers to view.

But what about a theme? Themes can also be limiting, especially when they are unclear or too specific. The theme I’ve chosen this year is something that has been on my mind a lot lately: nostalgia. As summer slips away and I get ready to graduate this December, I’ve found myself feeling incredibly nostalgic about past summers and the changing of the seasons. Sunsets make me feel nostalgic, as does film photography and being awake late at night when few other people are. I often feel nostalgic when I hear certain songs, think about certain people, or smell certain scents. If nostalgia means this many things to me, I think it will for other people, too.

Don’t worry if your submissions don’t obviously fit the theme because who am I to judge what nostalgia means to someone else? Just keep the theme in mind and let it guide you as you select your work to submit.

I’ve been looking forward to running this event for a long time and I truly cannot wait to see everyone’s submissions for the 2019 Fall Photo Showcase.

Let’s get nostalgic.
