Our Poetry Editor: Jennifer Schwartz

“Writing a book of poetry is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo.” – Don Marquis

Jennifer Schwartz works for the Salmon Creek Journal. She is a dedicated member who has a genuine interest for poetry. Not only does she do an excellent job in editing poetry, but she also works to coordinate events put on by the journal itself. She looks forward to the expansion of the Performance Arts Section of the journal with more submissions this year. In particular, she also aspires to see an increased variety in what is submitted. Jennifer loves all art forms, but she is most passionate about poetry and looks forward to reading and selecting the poetry submissions again this term.

Here is a piece selected by Jennifer Schwartz:

Bath
By Byran Nalos

That ghost
in the foggy mirror
becomes crisp with every swipe
the dry towel squeaks,

I drag the razor
through my foamed face,
again the towel, again
the razor.

Th tap water is fire
with white smoke,
outside the steamy window
there is snow.

In momentary glances
we are face to face
between squeaks
when I ask that ghost,
if he is trustworthy,

if he could take care of Her,
and Our Family,
and I hold the razor
to his throat

Her personal thoughts on why she chose the selection:

I chose “Bath” by Byron Nalos from 2009, because even with its deceivingly simple topic and scene there is a beautiful chilling darkness that comes through. It really makes me contemplate my own personal identity and those times people struggle with the pressures of life.
